Now it is a strange thing, but things that are good to have and days that are good to spend are soon told about, and not much to listen to; while things that are uncomfortable, palpitating, and even gruesome, may make a good tale, and take a deal of telling anyway. They stayed long in that good house, fourteen days at least, and they found it hard to leave. Bilbo would gladly have stopped there for ever and ever - even supposing a wish would have taken him right back to his hobbit-hole without trouble. Yet there is little to tell about their stay.

Tonight I’m Swimming To My Favorite Island
Since discarding the Smog moniker a few years back, Bill Callahan’s songwriting has grown more intricate and assured — he may have even written his best-ever LP with last year’s tour de force, Apocalypse. But his Smog material retains its pull. This solo show captures Callahan at Washington D.C.’s 9:30 Club in 1996, playing a short-but-powerful set. The intimacy of the performance might trick you into thinking you’re eavesdropping on someone’s innermost thoughts, hearing uncomfortable truths from deep within the subconscious. Of course, Callahan’s songs even back then were masterfully constructed to achieve this effect — he’s by no means some sort of idiot savant. As his subsequent work has shown, he’s a songwriter in the classic mold, creating new universes with each lyric. His greatest work might still be ahead of him! Thanks yet again to Jonah for sharing.
Bonus: To listen in on Bill in a more recent context, I highly recommend this show from last year, recorded in NYC by NYC Taper, natch.
